About this role


The Athletic is seeking a Senior Accountant to play an integral part in all aspects of accounting operations, as well as assist in the preparation of monthly and annual reports and with tax planning. You'll roll up your sleeves to execute accounting operations and help implement scalable systems and processes. You should be a team player and be comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment, all while developing and growing the accounting infrastructure at The Athletic.

Responsibilities


  • Responsible for month-end close process including financial statement review
  • Review all G/L entries for accuracy and ensure proper accounting
  • Assist in implementation, maintenance and adherence to internal controls under SOX and ensuring compliance under US GAAP
  • Assist in the design and scaling of revenue accounting and revenue recognition
  • Assist in preparation of schedules for external auditors
  • Assist with budget vs. actual reporting and monthly flux analysis
  • Assist with the development of accounting policies
  • Provide accounting and general ledger business partner support; act as a liaison to selected business groups across finance
  • Provide a high level of customer service within finance and to other business partners
  • Assist and manage various ad hoc projects as needed


Job Requirements

  • B.S. in Accounting or equivalent and active CPA
  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and SOX
  • High attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet software
  • Big 4 experience a plus
  • Start-up experience a plus
  • Experience with Xero and Netsuite a plus



Full time ٍStaff Accountant required in USA, Chicago, Illinois 

 

Primary Duties

As an important role within the Finance department, the Staff Accountant serves the organization's staff, department heads, Senior Executives and Federation members by driving the data integration process for transactional processing; including journal entries, account reconciliations and the review and recording of our various revenue streams. This role will also assist in other projects and analysis as necessary.
  • Account Analysis
    • Manages monthly general ledger account reviews
    • Prepare monthly account activity reconciliations
    • Analyzes financial trends and activity for strategic decision making and efficiencies
  • Journal Entries
    • Prepare and record monthly account journal entries
    • Assist in ways to improve the timeliness and efficiency of recording transactions
  • Treasury
    • Manage daily cash transactions Assist in preparation of cash flow forecasting
    • Special projects, analysis and support as required\

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in Accounting, CPA preferred
  • 2-4 years of progressive Finance experience·        
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products and a Financial ERP system (Sage MIP preferred, Oracle, Hyperion Reporting)
  • Strong verbal, written and in-person communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail

Full time Accountant required in USA, Houston, TX

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform P&L variance analysis and investigate unusual items on a rig level
  • Coordinate with Accounts Payable, Billings, Operations, Payroll and Accounting staff to ensure revenue and costs are accounted for in the proper period and coded to the proper accounts
  • Assist with the month-end close process, including filing as required
  • Prepare and post journal entries, code corrections and accruals as required
  • Prepare monthly reports to management explaining variances to Budget/Forecast
  • Perform monthly analysis of assigned general ledger accounts
  • Perform bank reconciliations
  • Continually looking for ways to improve the department and organization
  • Assist in preparation of year-end reporting requirements for Tax and Corporate Accounting
  • Prepare ad hoc reports as required by management and Corporate personnel
  • Participate in various special projects as needed
  • Must be willing to work overtime during month-end close if needed
  • Must follow company policies and department procedures
  • With progression, expectation for growth includes working with Operations and Marketing for first pass of Budget/Forecast for assigned business units
  • With progression, expectation for growth includes creating first draft of monthly commentaries for business unit which explains variances to Budget/Forecast

Education

Experience

  • 2-6 years of experience in accounting preferred
  • Prior oil and gas experience preferred
  • Experience with a major ERP System (SAP preferred)
